Moana chuckled as he considered the latest job he'd taken for the League, which was becoming a pattern. It wasn't his fault that the League was a very solid source of the kinds of odd jobs that he performed to get money and, well, not starve. It seemed there was always something to do, and they always had just short of the amount of people to do it. Moana would be a fool not to fill a need that the market so clearly required.

And if it made him feel better about himself to help people during a time of such stress, then nobody would be the wiser.

This request was a little silly, though. Really? A "haunted house?" That was just ridiculous. It was probably a tale someone told just to scare people away from the property for some reason, or, perhaps, to intentionally cause the value of the living space to depreciate. People were really willing to use Pokemon as an excuse for everything. If there was seriously a single ghost in here, he would eat his hat.

Moana looked at the door, imposing and colored with a foreboding black and creaking when his fingers barely brushed it. His newly adopted Kabutops, Sheru, glared apprehensively at the door, and he swallowed despite himself.

Maybe he was a little glad he didn't have a hat to eat.

She knew better than to simply question the reality of ghost pokemon existing in there at all. All pokemon were unique in many different ways and from her knowledge, they loved these kind of places. Abandoned homes, places that look a bit run down. It was like they were moths to a flame, drawing them in. [break][break]

She was just glad she didn't have to go in alone. Someone else had already arrived for the job, and Ruby couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief as she approached with her pokemon. The twin pokemon walking by her sides. They were immune to ghost type attacks with their half Normal typing, but they were also not afraid even in the slightest. Darling was simply holding Ruby's hand gently, while Dear took the lead and walked slightly in front. [break][break]

"Hey!" Ruby called out, hoping that the nervousness in her voice wasn't too audible as she approached the house. "You here to investigate too?" Her eyes would glance over them, even taking a brief look over at their Kabutops before speaking once more. "The name's Ruby." [break][break]

With the politeness of a gentleman, Dear simply walked up and held open the front door for the two of them, looking like quite the proper butler as he firmly pushed the door open. The old hinges creaked and squeaked a bit, the dust being disturbed floating up into the air a bit.

Her eyes stared into the house, instantly regretting the fact that she didn't bring a flashlight. "... Do you uh, want to go in first? Or shall I?"

His partner in the mission was a girl named Ruby. It seemed she was around his age. Huh, did all of Hoenn's adults really have something better to do?

Oh well. "Yeah, I'm here for the ghosts," he said. Ruby's two Indeedee accompanied her, which he remembered were psychic types. When he remembered that, it sparked a connection in Moana's brain. He'd seen this girl somewhere before, but he couldn't remember where.

"I'm Moana," he said. "Is it possible that we've met? You seem familiar." He shrugged. "Could be wrong, though."

The fact that the Indeedee were psychic types, however, presented another problem. "Will your Pokemon be okay?" he asked. "Ghost attacks aren't nice to psychic Pokemon. I dunno if there's really any ghost in here, but I'd be careful just in case."

The door swung open noisily, and Moana almost laughed at how stereotypically creepy that was. The Indeedee seemed to harbor no hesitation, though, as it held the door open to the both of them, showing the darkness inside the residency.

At Ruby's question, Moana shrugged and stepped forward, Sheru following him. He was a little nervous, but it was no big deal, really. His Pokemon, and Ruby's too, could probably handle any malicious ghosts in the building.

He reached for the light switch, and flicked it upwards. The ceiling lights flickered on for a moment, but then they immediately fizzled out, leaving the room in darkness once more.

"...huh. Got any Pokemon that can light up, Ruby?" he asked sheepishly, checking his own Pokeballs in case he had something that could help.

It wasn't exactly easy to forget her pink locks, anyways. She mentally tucked the name Moana into the back of her head to remember for later. However, she couldn't help but smile at the concern for her Indeedee. Perhaps it was best to answer every line of conversation first, before entering. [break][break]

No, she wasn't stalling. Clearly, that was the cowardly thing to do. And she wasn't a coward.

"Well, I don't know if we've ever met before! But I have been in the news a few times, so that's probably where you recognize me." A massive understatement, sure. But really, how much explanation was needed to give to every stranger? Either way, she gave him a gentle smile. Only for that smile to falter slightly as he walked inside and flicked a light switch that eventually failed. Great. No lights. [break][break]

Fumbling about for her phone, Ruby pulled it out and turned on its weak flashlight. Something was better than nothing, at the very least. However, her footsteps halted at the entrance of the building. Simply peeking in, shining the dim light all around before taking in a deep breath and taking the single step inside. [break][break]

Her Indeedee followed suit, with Dear making sure to prop open the door with a nearby rock before joining Ruby by her side. Despite her obvious fear at this point, she kept speaking, hoping that the distraction would help. "The uh... Indeedee's are also half normal type pokemon! So they're immune to ghost type attacks! And just, uh, also. Not scared in the least of them. Which is good! Because, umm... you know, not good to have pokemon scared when it's trying to protect you, right?" [break][break]

God, she sounded like such an idiot. [break][break]

The news? A few times? Huh. That was new. This unassuming girl might be the biggest name Moana had met in Hoenn yet.

(Of course, Moana didn't know that soon, he would share a battlefield with the champion and make the news himself.)

"Well, then," he said, surprise coloring his voice. "Looks like I'm in the presence of a local celebrity. Should I be asking for an autograph?"

They went into the room, and Moana quickly noticed that Ruby seemed to be a terrible person for this mission.

Well, no. That wasn't necessarily true. Just because she was afraid didn't mean that she was unsuited. Fear was a perfectly normal emotion to be feeling. Hell, he was a little spooked himself, behind his skepticism. However, it was painfully obvious that Ruby was absolutely terrified of the mission, with all her rambling and her near-blatant admission that she had brought her Indeedee to compensate for her own fear.

Moana fought to keep a grin off his face. Laughing at the expense of someone he'd barely met was a bit rude. But he did reply, "Of course. It's important not to show fear, especially with ghosts. I've heard some like Misdreavus even need to eat fear to live." He shot a meaningful glance at Ruby. "Wouldn't want to grab their attention, eh?"

...He wouldn't laugh. He wouldn't.

After all, who knew. Maybe this dingy apartment would actually be haunted... even though nothing untoward had happened since the two of them had entered...
